Family Practice - Newborn Nursery

First year residents spent one month in the Newborn Nursery at Mountainside Hospital. During this rotation residents learn how to care for the babies born at the hospital and work closely with the staff neonatologist to stabilize and treat acutely ill babies. They learn to recognize the seriously ill neonate and how to initiate the appropriate level of care and consultation for serious conditions. Residents also increase their knowledge of conditions that may put the neonate at higher risk and learn to perform a variety of procedures, including circumcisions, resuscitations and venipunctures.
